Thanks to the generous support of The McLean Contributionship, Child Guidance Resource Centers (CGRC) has completed critical bathroom accessibility renovations at its Supportive Housing Aging in Place (SHAIP) residence, a 24/7 staffed, eight-bed facility serving adults age 55 and older living with mental health conditions and co-occurring medical, intellectual, and physical disabilities.
The project upgraded two of the residence’s four bathrooms to improve safety, accessibility, and quality of life for residents. Renovations included wider doorways, sliding doors, walk-in showers, ADA-compliant fixtures, redesigned layouts for improved mobility, and durable, easy-to-clean materials.
Residents in two SHAIP apartments now benefit from safer bathrooms that reduce fall risks, increase independence, and support aging in place with dignity and comfort.
“The most significant result of this project is the creation of safer, more accessible bathrooms for residents in our Supportive Housing Aging in Place program,” said Adejoke Balogun. “Consistent with our mission to support aging with dignity, these renovations address critical safety concerns while increasing access to personal care and promoting greater independence.”
The success of the project is already serving as a model for future accessibility improvements across CGRC’s residential programs. The organization hopes to renovate the remaining two bathrooms at the SHAIP residence and other building projects across the other residential facilities.
