Functional Family Therapy

In-Home & Community

Families struggle because of stress, conflict, and unmet needs that disrupt healthy connections. When communication breaks down, small problems can escalate into patterns that affect a young person's behavior, mental health, school performance, and relationships in the community.

Functional Family Therapy (FFT) is an evidence-based, short-term family therapy model designed for youth ages 11–18 and their caregivers. It is a strength-based approach built on acceptance, respect, and collaboration — one that recognizes every family already possesses strengths that can be harnessed for positive change.

FFT is grounded in the belief that families are the most potent agents of change in a young person’s life. When caregivers and youth are supported together rather than in isolation, lasting and meaningful progress becomes possible. Its purpose is to avoid blame and restore connection, strengthen trust, and equip families with the tools they need to succeed long after therapy ends.

Rather than focusing solely on behaviors, FFT addresses the underlying relational and emotional dynamics that drive conflict. By working with the entire family system, FFT helps build protective factors, reduce risk factors, and strengthen family connections — creating a foundation for long-term success at home, in schools, and in the community.

How FFT Creates Lasting Change

FFT follows a structured, research-backed framework consisting of five major components, each with a clear purpose:

  1. Engagement – Building trust and ensuring every family member feels heard, respected, and invested in the process.
  2. Motivation – Reducing blame and negativity while increasing hope, understanding, and willingness to change.
  3. Relational Assessment – Identifying the patterns, strengths, and challenges that shape how the family interacts.
  4. Behavior Change – Teaching practical, evidence-based skills that address communication, parenting, and conflict.
  5. Generalization – Helping families apply new skills across real-life settings and maintain progress over time.

This approach ensures that change is not temporary or superficial — it is integrated into daily life.

FFT is about preparing families for what comes next. Once goals are met, therapists support families in building confidence in their new skills and identifying ongoing supports that will help sustain progress.

The goal is independence, resilience, and lasting family stability.
